Watch Deborah Cheetham’s MPavilion Wominjeka Song Cycle

Coinciding with the launch of the 9th MPavilion, you can now watch Deborah Cheetham’s MPavilion Wominjeka Song Cycle for free here and on MSO.live until the close of the MPavilion season on Thursday 6 April 2023.

Set in the Melbourne Recital Centre, Deborah Cheetham’s Wominjeka Song Cycle is a rare presentation of eight songs from the acclaimed composer and MSO First Nations Chair. Continuing MPavilion’s longest-running commission from philanthropist Naomi Milgrom AC, each song is a musically expressive welcome to Bunjil’s River Country, composed in response to the changing architecture and design of each year’s MPavilion. Wominjeka is the Boon Wurrung word for welcome, and Deborah’s pieces reflect on the country that we gather on.

It takes us on a journey through the languages of the Boonwurrung, Yorta Yorta and Wadawurrung nations. The performance combines the talents of musicians from Short Black Opera, Dhungala Childrens’ Choir, Ensemble Dutala, Orchestra Victoria, MSO and Consort of Melbourne with translations and cultural guidance provided by N’arweet Aunty Carolyn Briggs AM.

Wominjeka (Welcome). We acknowledge the people of the Eastern Kulin Nations as the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet. We pay our respects to the land, their ancestors and their elders—past, present and to the future.
